Stewart Arevalo Named New Head Coach

The Niagara College Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is pleased to announce that Stewart Arevalo has been named the new head coach of the Niagara Knights Women's Volleyball team. Arevalo, takes over from Kerby Bentley, who was the head coach of the Knights for the past five seasons.

Arevalo, who currently lives in Burlington, Ontario, began coaching in 1995 at Northampton Community College, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In 1997, he received the position as head coach of the Women's Volleyball program at a small Division III school, Cedar Crest College. After only winning four matches his first year, the Cedar Crest Classics finished sixth in the conference in 1998, earning Arevalo the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. To date, Arevalo became the youngest coach in NCAA history of any sport, to receive such an honor (at 23 years).

In 1999, Arevalo became the head coach of Muhlenberg College Women's Program before moving to Villanova in 2000 to become the first assistant of the Women’s Volleyball team as well as head coach of the Men’s Volleyball team. During that time he helped mold the Wildcats into one of the top teams in the Big East, culminating with a berth in the Big East Championship in 2003. While at Villanova, Arevalo also served as head coach of the Men’s Club team from 2000-to-2003, a run which included a MACVC Championship in his final season.

In the summer of 2000, Arevalo was given an opportunity to coach with the National programs. He began with Development camps for the 16 and Under age group, in Kalamazoo, Michigan and Lake Placid, New York. He eventually improved his ranks, becoming an assistant coach in 2003 with the A-2 High Performance National Programs 14 and 16 and Under, at the Olympic Training Center, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He remained with the National teams for seven summers.

Arevalo, is also very well known in the USA club scene. He qualified seven different Junior Girls Volleyball teams from the Pennsylvania Keystone Region for the Nationals.

In Canada, he opened up his own beach club in Burlington, Ontario, training over thirty athletes in Tiers One and Two in the 16 and Under division in the summer of 2009. Today, his beach club has over fifty athletes (both male and female) ranging in age from 14 to 23.

“I believe that coach Arevalo brings a great deal of coaching experience to our program,” said Ray Sarkis, Coordinator of Athletics and Recreation. “The fact that Coach Arevalo has worked with female athletes for most of his career, on both sides of the border, should be very beneficial to our women’s program. His knowledge and involvement with skill development, technical aspects and tactical preparation will better prepare our athletes for competition at the post- secondary level.”
